Deep Cleaning vs Regular Cleaning: Which One Does Your Home Need?

The difference between deep and regular cleaning is not just time. A regular clean keeps a tidy home in shape, while a deep clean reaches inside, under and behind everything. This guide explains what each one covers, how long they take, what they cost in Kenya and when you need which.

Quick answer

A regular clean covers surfaces, floors, kitchens and bathrooms in a home that is already in good shape. A deep clean adds the inside of the oven, fridge and cupboards, grout, limescale, doors, skirting boards and high areas. Book a deep clean first, or every six to twelve months, and keep the home fresh with regular cleaning in between.

When people call us for a quote, one of the first questions is simple: do you need a deep clean or a regular clean? Many are not sure, and that is understandable, because the names sound similar. However, the difference between deep and regular cleaning is large. It affects the checklist, the team size, the time on site and the price. Choosing the wrong one leads to disappointment, either because the home still looks tired or because you paid for more than you needed.

Cleaning

What is regular cleaning?

A regular clean keeps a home that is already in reasonable shape fresh and hygienic. It focuses on the surfaces you see and use every day. Typically, a regular clean includes:

  • dusting reachable surfaces, shelves and furniture;
  • wiping kitchen worktops, the hob, the sink and the outside of appliances;
  • cleaning and disinfecting toilets, basins, showers and baths;
  • vacuuming carpets, rugs and sofas;
  • sweeping and mopping hard floors;
  • making beds and emptying bins.

Regular cleaning works best weekly or fortnightly. Because dirt never gets a chance to build up, each visit is quick and affordable. See our house cleaning page for regular plans.

What is deep cleaning?

A deep clean goes much further. It reaches the places regular cleaning skips and removes grime that has built up over months. In addition to everything in a regular clean, a deep clean usually covers:

  • inside the oven, the grill, the microwave and the fridge;
  • inside kitchen cupboards and drawers;
  • degreasing the cooker hood, the splashback and cabinet fronts;
  • scrubbing tile grout and removing limescale from taps, showers and glass;
  • cleaning doors, door frames, skirting boards and switches;
  • dusting high areas, light fittings, fans and the tops of wardrobes;
  • cleaning window tracks, sills and inside glass;
  • moving light furniture to clean behind and underneath.

Our team for full home resets follows a longer checklist, described on our service page, with more cleaners and more time on site.

When you need a deep clean

Book a deep clean in these situations:

  • Your first professional clean. A deep clean resets the home, so regular cleaning can then keep it fresh.
  • Moving in or out. Landlords inspect inside ovens, cupboards and bathrooms, so a regular clean is not enough. See our move-in and move-out cleaning.
  • After building work or renovations. Fine dust gets everywhere. In that case, book post-construction cleaning.
  • After illness in the home. A thorough clean of high-touch surfaces helps reduce germs.
  • Before a big event. Weddings, holidays and family visits are a good reason.
  • When regular cleaning stops working. If the home still looks tired after a regular clean, grime has built up.

When regular cleaning is enough

If the home is already in good shape, regular cleaning keeps it there. For example, a couple in a two-bedroom apartment who cook lightly and have no pets may need a deep clean only once a year. By contrast, a family of five with a dog and daily frying may need one every three or four months. The key point is that regular cleaning works only when it follows a deep clean. Otherwise, the cleaner spends every visit fighting old grime.

Deep vs regular cleaning in the kitchen

The kitchen shows the difference between deep and regular cleaning most clearly. During a regular clean, the cleaner wipes worktops, the hob and the sink, cleans the outside of appliances and mops the floor. During a deep clean, however, the team also removes oven racks and soaks them, degreases the oven interior, empties and cleans the fridge, wipes inside every cupboard and degreases the cooker hood filters. As a result, a deep-cleaned kitchen smells fresh, and it stays clean for longer.

Deep vs regular cleaning in bathrooms

Bathrooms are the second big difference. A regular clean disinfects the toilet, cleans the basin and shower and mops the floor. Meanwhile, a deep clean adds grout scrubbing, limescale removal from taps and glass, mould treatment on silicone and ceilings, and cleaning of extractor fans, shelves and the backs of toilets. In Kenyan homes with hard water from boreholes, limescale builds up quickly, so a deep clean makes taps and glass shine again.

How long each one takes

Time on site is one of the clearest differences. For example, a regular clean of a one-bedroom home takes one cleaner three to four hours. A deep clean of the same home takes two cleaners five to six hours. For a four-bedroom house, a regular clean takes two cleaners four to five hours, whereas a deep clean needs a team of three or four for most of the day. Therefore always check the hours and the team size when comparing quotes.

What neither clean includes

Some jobs are separate services, even in a deep clean. For example, carpet and sofa extraction, mattress steaming, curtain cleaning, outside windows above ground floor, water tank cleaning and fumigation all need special machines or products. You can add them to a deep clean, which often saves on a separate visit. For those, see our carpet cleaning and sofa cleaning pages.

Health and hygiene

Both cleans help keep a home hygienic, but in different ways. Regular cleaning removes everyday germs from high-touch surfaces. In contrast, deep cleaning removes grease, mould and dust that build up in hidden places and can affect breathing and allergies. The World Health Organization links indoor damp and mould to breathing problems, which is one more reason to deep clean bathrooms and wardrobes regularly, especially in the rains.

How it works

A simple plan that works

For most Kenyan homes, the best plan is simple. First, book a deep clean to reset the home. Next, keep it fresh with a regular clean every week or two. Then add a deep clean every six to twelve months, plus carpets, sofas and mattresses once or twice a year. Finally, clean the water tank every six months. This plan keeps the home consistently clean and spreads the cost over the year.

Questions

Questions to ask before booking

  • What is on the checklist, room by room?
  • How many cleaners will come, and for how long?
  • Are products and equipment included?
  • Is inside the oven and fridge included, or extra?
  • What happens if something is missed?

A good company answers all of these in writing. If a quote does not, ask before you book. Our guide on the house cleaning checklist also shows what a full routine looks like.

Our verdict

Understanding the difference between deep and regular cleaning helps you book the right service and avoid paying for the wrong one. If the home has not had a thorough clean for months, start with a deep clean. If it is already in good shape, regular cleaning keeps it that way. Still unsure? Send us a few photos of the kitchen and bathrooms, and we will tell you honestly which one you need. Request a cleaning quote to get started.

Signs your home needs a deep clean now

A few signs tell you regular cleaning is no longer enough. For example, the oven smokes when you turn it on, the grout has turned grey or black, taps feel rough with limescale, cupboards smell stale and dust collects again a day after cleaning. Likewise, a musty smell in wardrobes or a sticky film on kitchen cabinets means grime has built up. If you notice two or more of these, book a deep clean, then return to regular cleaning afterwards.

Deep and regular cleaning for rentals

Landlords and tenants see the difference between deep and regular cleaning most clearly at the start and end of a tenancy. A regular clean during the tenancy keeps the home pleasant. However, the move-out inspection looks inside the oven, the cupboards and the bathroom grout. Therefore tenants should always book a deep clean before handing back keys, while landlords should deep clean before a new tenant moves in. That way, both sides start from the same clear standard, and deposit disputes become rare.

Deep and regular cleaning together

In practice, most homes do best with both: a deep clean to reset the home and regular cleaning to keep it that way. Ask us to plan the two together, and we will suggest a schedule that fits your home and routine.
